In order to vote you must be registered in the area you live. When I registered they asked if I had a party preference and I said no so they put me down as an independent (this is not a party). I assumed at the time that allowed you to vote in the primary elections. The primary election allows the Democrat or Republican party to choose the highest vote getter to be entered into the general election in November. I guess you had to declare either Democrat or Republican to vote in their primary election. In the general election you can vote for anybody in any party you want. No one knows who you vote for. That was 24 years ago. I don't know if they still ask that question.
