Doug:

You may think you've done no justice to this Towhee, but he (I'm seen 
male plumage, here) seems to be suprised that you caught him at all.  A 
very representative rendering!  they are one of the few birds native to 
the northwest that I can recall who have red irises.

You should consider this  one for your book; many folks out there 
(including me) may never get this close to a Towhee!

Yes we do, now called Spotted Towhee to distinguish this bird from the
eastern form, now considered separate species.  I agree, they are VERY
elusive and beautiful.  My best so far, which doesn't do the bird 
justice:
