I'm thinking Geroge is on to something, especially since the camera was
tilted down. The lens is not of inordinate weight, the fracture happened on
the front rim.  It  is easy to miss the  tab, and  get the base partially
on.  It gives more resistance when the tab is not engaged, so it could be
that the act of  turning the latch  began the fracture.
