At this point in time it seems fairly clear and accepted that top-end
digital cameras and lenses have surpassed film in technical quality
for all relevant ASA applications.
However, the subjective "quality" of the image remains a choice for
the photographer.
Film has a "look." Digital capture has a "look."
Silver prints have a "look." Inkjet prints have a "look." Lambda
prints have a "look." Etc.
We're privileged to live in a time when we have more choice as to the
"look" of our prints and how we achieve it.
The M8, in the right hands, can certainly deliver "optimum" results,
in digital capture, against any 10-12 megapixel camera currently
available, within 160 asa to 640 asa. At 1250 and 2500 it has a look
all its own and if you wish to achieve high speed grainless,
noiseless images - you choose Canon. If you enjoy high speed grain in
film - you can probably enjoy the M8 at higher speeds. Subjective. YMMV
