But the trip to Santa Fe was by no means a total or even major loss. I had the opportunity to visit some people I had met at the New Orleans Spring Shoot, and had an even greater opportunity to meet, talk with, and share lunch and dinner with people with whom I've sort of met (via email) over the past 7 or 8 years. Phil Swango, Greg and JoAnn Lorenzo, Brian and Virginia Reid, Henning and Tanya Wulff, Mark Rabiner, and Stasys Petravicius (try pronouncing that...there are two correct pronunciations). The weather was beautiful, the food was magnificent, I came nowhere near getting mugged at any time of day or night, and I found a wonderful restaurant in the middle of nowhere between Taos and Espagnol (Jack Bauer wouldn't have been able to find it). The keynote speaker was very good. And I was once again surprised by how *little* overlap there is between the LHSA and the LUG. If Kyle thinks the LUG talks too much about their cameras without putting them to work, we are actually doing quite well here. They did exactly the same thing to me, even using the same words ("I need some help here"). But all I had in the bag was an M8 and some lenses for it. And half a dozen SD cards and some spare batteries. They ran it through their scanner about 6 times, seriously annoying the people who were behind me in line, and then took it out of my sight, probably to pour chicken blood on it. I know from my days at NASA helping with the design of computer networks for the Space Shuttle that SD cards can be erased or changed (but not permanently damaged) by radiation. But the only pictures I still had on the SD cards are the ones I took this morning in Los Alamos; all the rest got safely uploaded to my laptop and then burned onto DVDs. DVDs are not damaged by the kind of radiation they use here. _______________________________________________ Leica Users Group. See http://leica-users.org/mailman/listinfo/lug for more information
