Understood on the cropping and auto focus issues. Also, as mentioned, I think these shots have a lot to commend them. And way better than my close up of the scrub turkey in black and white! You might be able to gain a little apparent sharpness with the right fiddle in PS? Scott Kelby has some good suggestions in his book. I promise to make them sharper if somebody would donate a DMR. ;-) Seriously though, I think you're seeing the result of severe cropping. I admit the Nikon zoom at the top end is a little soft. I like the Telyt better. It pops in and out of focus nicely where the Nikon you aren't really sure. And auto focus is a waste of time with birds.
