AFAIK micro lenses have been used for years on small sensors to
improve light sensitivity by concentrating more of the light on the
photosite rather than the surround. Maybe bigger sensors did not have
this before? Maybe aligning the microlenses with the photosites over
a reasonable range of temperatures has been only recently possible?
near full frame probably means not as much smaller than 6x4.5 than
before ;-)
