I suspect that what you found difficult was the background. The brick
wall is just too close to the subject and detracts from it. It is
patterned and it has about the same tonal values.

It would be difficult, if not impossible, to print it "down". Probably
the best way to have gotten separation between the wall and the tree
would have been to shoot in color.
