Inside the lens cavity of the IIIf, I measured the flange-to-curtain distance by using a plastic drinking straw and marking it with a gel pen, then checking the results with a small vernier caliper. I get 28mm to the shutter in the center, and 23mm to the shutter rail along the bottom. I don't know how this compares with the M8. My J-12 extends approximately 23mm from the flange to the back of the rear element. I first thought this might vary with focus distance, but concluded that the movement of the focus cam was leading me astray. Of course, the LTM to M adaptor would reduce the J-12 intrusion into the M by 1mm. You might want to look into the M lens cavity with a penlite to see if there is anything other than the shutter that needs to be avoided.
