That also ties in to the banding which also seems to originate with a point source of light but from the edges of the sensor. I think you have the noise issue licked with your minus 2 stop exposure. The M8 appears to have much less noise at effectively ISO 640 than the D5 at ISO 800. I tried my suggested test with my Nikon D2X and the 85mm f1.4 and could not duplicate the bulbous light source. I went in and out of focus and up and down the exposure range.
