Frank,
The issue in the Canon AF system is that the 1.8 version is built somewhat
better than the toys given away free at MacDonalds; and the 1.4 version
while the build quality is better the performance at 1.4 to 2 leaves a lot
to be desired.  Therefore, if you use the 50mm focal length a lot the only
real choice if you shoot near wide open is the 1.2 version.  This is really
good marketing by Canon as many users, after using the throw away 18-55
think that the 1.8 fifty is pretty good and the 1.4 is awsome; but people
who are used to lenses that might last a couple of years wouldn't touch them
unless they could carry a few spares.  :)
