Perhaps I just look more menacing than you.

Last week, for example, I was shooting a kindergarten class' Christmas
concert. One little girl simply couldn't cope with my Canon DSLR with a
6-inch-long zoom lens. I replaced it with the 85/1.2 and asked her if that
was OK. She said "it's still too big". A nearby mom loaned me a silk scarf
and I covered the camera with that, and the girl calmed down. The next day I
came back to do the other class' concert, and used my M6 (gasp! actual film)
and there was no issue. I didn't do a scientific
experiment by comparing the two.

Children seem to equate "camera" with "mama's point-and-shoot".
After the first show, one little boy came up to me and pointed to the camera
and asked "are you a doctor?". Maybe he thought it was medical equipment.
