I just got my M8 today, and timed turning it on---I thought it was
pretty fast, ready to go by the
time it was up to my eye. I let it sleep, and it seemed to waken
equally fast. So I let it sleep
again, and measured wakeup time with a stopwatch---about half a second.

I got into the habit of tapping the shutter button as I lifted the
camera to activate the meter on
the M6---I expect with the habit, the M8 will always be ready to
shoot once it is at my eye level.

I wonder if wakeup time depends on something like the SD card speed
(I'm using a sandisk extreme II),
or camera settings or something.
