They suffer from microscratches on the front element due to very soft glass, and are typically affected by haze as well. If you can get a clean one, like my Sherry-serviced example, you'll find that it is a totally different beast. Opened up, it renders a soft image that is superb for romantic or flattering portraits in natural light. Stopped down, contrast and resolution improve dramatically.
