I must have a bad unit. It works fine but goes through a battery every few
months with minimal use. I'm not going to buy another. The VC II is fine
with me.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. I've been using one for a few years now. Pocket lint is
clogging it up, but it still works like a charm ... except in areas of
extreme heat and humidity (Zanzibar).
