As there was only gas or candle light at the time these houses were built the best use had to be made of natural light.You still find quite a few corners like this in the East End (I lived in Bow, during 1973), just south of the Thames, and on the south bank, behind the warehouses. Though I must say that this alley looks very familiar and could be just around the corner from Covent Garden.
