If you take a look at the windows below the beam this is very probably 
an old weaving loft, or perhaps a tailors "sweat-shop" (Could even be a 
cigar rollers shop). As there was only gas or candle light at the time 
these houses were built the best use had to be made of natural light.You 
still find quite a few corners like this in the East End (I lived in 
Bow, during 1973), just south of the Thames, and on the south bank, 
behind the warehouses. Though I must say that this alley looks very 
familiar and could be just around the corner from Covent Garden.
