As the batteries die the camera will slow down giving you plenty of notice. I recall one time on the Blue Ridge Parkway when I finished off three rolls with the motor going so slow that I could have advanced the film faster with a LTM. As to autofocus, with the USM lenses they will focus when something moves in front then refocus when the offending object moves out of the way. Possibly twice as fast when you are using the central focusing point as one of the outlying ones. Autofocus is rarely fooled, but if you want to focus on an eye then grab the focusing ring and touch up the focus when needed.
