Subject: [Leica] Leica participation in 4/3rds format FIRST IMAGES FROM NEW E330

Both the 11-22 (22-44 35 mm equiv) and the 14-54 (28-108) are excellent. The
14-54 is my standard lens, but the 11-22 is definitely the better of the two
- which is saying a lot. I am convinced that that lens at 11 is giving me
results comparable to those I got with my M 21 ASPH...I've played with the
7-14, and it's quite good, but it's slow for me and I don't often want that
wide a lens.

-----
The new E330 arrived on my doorstep Friday - Olympus gives me equipment, so
keep that in mind as you read my Oly comments...This is the first DSLR out
with a live LCD, and has features very similar to the new Panasonic being
discussed earlier - two "live views" - one normal, one macro. So here are
some test images, shot using the live view LCD..(And I stress that these are
just test images, not 'art.' ;-))

http://gallery.leica-users.org/album373

All are shot at 800 iso, and the results are a definite improvement over 800
in earlier Olympus bodies. All were shot as jpgs because there is, as of
now, no Adobe raw converter for these files - there undoubtedly will be
fairly soon. The cat was shot in black and white mode, and I think they
really got that right. (if it seems a tad soft, blame it on my shaky hands.)
I shot the comics to check color rendition - this was set for "natural"
color, with all the settings in the neutral position. I don't know how it
looks on your monitors, but the colors in the capture image are dead-on the
colors in the comics - perfect.

The two shots of my daughter - the one with the, uh, gesture, is her normal
pose when I point a camera at her! - were back lit, one using the spot
meter, one using the matrix mode - at 800 iso.

About the features - the LCD swivels out from the back and the camera can be
used like a TLR, which I can't wait to try for lap shots on the T...The LCD
is REALLY dark in dim light, almost unusable, but in day light, normal room
light, is fine. There's a booster mode for use in dim light, which works,
but which gives really weird images. The LCD live view feature does NOT show
depth of field, nor does it show exposure accurately...

The viewfinder is small and fairly dim - no question. It doesn't touch the
E1, and is not as good as the E500. Apparently this has to do with the
placement of a second sensor for the live view feature.

The ergonomics are excellent, better than the original E300 - nice grip,
well place controls, good heft.

The MOS sensor does seem to be an improvement over the original Oly 4/3 ccd,
and I assume it will eventually migrate to a new pro body - God knows when.

Over all, the camera strikes me as a potentially great street shooter using
the live LCD. And the live LCD strikes me, at this point, as a great idea
that still needs work.
