I find the Lager books, beautiful as they are, pretty useless for the user, and many of the others are overpriced and do not always provide accurate information. In my view, the best reference guides (and cheap, too) are the two Hove Pocket Books (one on cameras, the other on lenses and accessories), and Erwin Puts' Leica Lens Book and the information on his web site. I know that some consider him an uncritical Leica apologist (which actually he is not--I know him personally) but when you want to know whether Leica lens X is better than Leica lens Y and by how much, or which serial numbers correspond to which version of a lens, then Puts is hard to beat.
