IIRC the Nikon scanners have a shallow DOF so if the slide isn't flat the 
scan will only be partially in focus.  Many older Kodachromes bulge in the 
cardboard mount making the problem apparent.  The scans I've seen from 
bulged slides are essentially unusable.

I don't remember, but I believe there is some issue with 'chromes.  You may 
want to Google NIKON 4000 reviews or something like that and see what get.
