New is the way to go if possible. Anyway I never meant to imply, and as far as I can tell didn't imply, that used lenses are not satisfying only that it is a tricky business. In my opinion it is on par with used cars and even well intentioned sellers can be unwittingly selling sub-standard equipment. There is no substitute for expert advice.
