Both are great, and I see the dangers connected with the second shot 
very clearly. The way I make this kind of image these days is to simply 
aim the SLR in the general direction and shoot--without lifting the 
camera to my eye. Doing this with a 17mm lens (multiply by 1.6 on the 
20D) and autofocus pretty much ensure a decent image, although it 
invariably needs some cropping and rotating in Photoshop.
