Bob,
this shot is not a sage, it's not flowering here yet, but the flowers on 
a rosemary shrub are about the same size and shape.

Get in as close as you can and use a tripod, this was taken with a 55mm 
macro on a 20D so it's more  less compatible with your set-up.
The background was selected out on this shot and filled with "soft light"
