I can certainly provide some anecdotal evidence to support the latter part, at least... I was space-greedy (I've been accumulating uncompressed rips of my CDs) and popped a 400G Hitachi SATA into my machine. After all, I'd had excellent results with the IBM 120GXP and 180GXP series. One of the Hitachi 400s was DOA and the second was dead within the first week. All hail Retrospect, is all I can say. Not managing to generalize from this lesson, I replaced the Hitachi 400G drive with another 400, this time a Seagate. That's been humming along (touch wood) just swell for lo this past month or so.
