This is an absolutely wonderful lens and by F2 needs no apologies for image quality. The new Summicron will be even better, but at $1000 more than a used Lux I don't see the point. Possibly smaller size. If in your neck of the woods no one rents Leica, one dealer on this list rents lenses and I believe that Rich Pinto at Photovillage does as well. Try before you buy. Many can not get used to the frame lines, and some can not get used to the size. Answer two, look into the new HP printer which prints drop dead gorgeous B&W on HP paper. Or, convert to MIS inks on a cheap Epson. Almost all the printers will not print archival prints on paper that is not the manufacturers. The paper and ink is designed together. Exceptions are the carbon black ink sets sold. I guess mileage varies, my R800 prints a wonderful cool B&W print on Epson paper. In certain light the prints have a very faint green tint to them. However, others, find a very unsatisfactory print. I do know that the set up that Tina Manley uses prints some pretty fabulous prints. Check the LUG archives for that one. Anyone have any info on this rumoured lens? I've been doing some portraiture with a 50 and a 90. I seem to do better with a 50, which makes me wonder what I'm going to do with the 90. Still, I favour a slightly longer lens. My thoughts keep leading me to believing in the 75 lux. But if a 75 'cron was in the works (hopefully less money) I'd be very interested. And as a second notion. Even though I've not yet been able to make an acceptable print (bw) from my epson, I keep at it. I'm thinking about the new 1280 and a lyson bw ink set up. If anyone has thoughts or experience I'd love to hear about it. My problems so far are all the ones we've all read about. Most lately metamarism. And then there's the whole longevity issue. I have "archival" paper from Luminos that has yellowed worse than any RC Ilford I have lying around here. I scan my trix into rgb 48 bit files. I resolve the color shift in channel mixer. I print using printer color mgmt only. I get really nice prints with a very cold tone that?s only visible outside or at my office. At home they look great. I don't have the ability or room to put a conventional darkroom back in here and I do like the ability to clean up the dust and occasional scratches in pshop. Maybe I'm asking too much. Maybe I need to know a lot more about all this inkjet business. Ha, Maybe. _______________________________________________ Leica Users Group.
