Leica's focussing mounts assumes the hand will be moving it so it doesn't have the low power consumption specs of an AF system. This means the LEica lens can be designed and constructed to tighter tolerances. Simply adding AF mechanisms to existing lense will give you too much battery drain. Likewise a lens has to be designed with IS as an integral part of the design.
