There is a way to switch between the glossy black and matte black without deleting and reinstalling drivers. I also use the $50 Quadtone RIP software for black&white output, and even the folks at the local Epson pro dealer had to admit that my b&w output with Ultrachromes was better than that of the 4000 with the Epson drivers. If I were in your shoes & did not need a wide carriage printer immediately, I'd hold off until the wide carriage version of the R800 appears in the US.
