Sorry, Simon. That's no good enough.  On my last little jaunt for MSN, 
the co-producer checked a Canon digital SLR + lenses and his backup 
Sony laptop in a Pelican case.  Both were gone when he opened the case 
back at Seatac (Seattle).  The airline, airport authority, and TSA have 
all refused to take any responsibility.  We used to check equipment in 
locked Pelican cases with no problem.  But now that your locks are 
routinely cut off, it seems the thieves are having a heyday rifling 
through people's baggage looking for goodies.

With experiences like this, you can understand why we "cheat" and stuff 
things in vests and pockets.  Mind you, in my example, I'm not talking 
about carrying on some huge bag.  WIth a single body, three lenses and 
a flash, I'm over the limit for many intl flights.  My bag is around 
the size of a school back pack.  But because it's digital, I have to 
carry a briefcase as well with the laptop.  I don't have a choice.
