If you were to design an airport security system you would not rely on a single level of screening would you? The part you notice as a passenger is just a small step in quite a complicated system. That works for the known threats. Obviously that is the catch the new threat. That,s why you will only read reports about the system being unreliable. Terrorist groups try constantly to transport objects and try to check what gets through how and when. You dont want them to know what attempts were discovered.
