M is one of the great movies; even today it packs quite a wallop. Many people can't watch it owing to the subject matter. (A statement, not a criticism of those people. There are movies I don't watch for the same reason, but M isn't one of them.) It was made before Peter Lorre became a sort of caricture of himself and shows that he really could act.
