[Author Prev] [Author Next] [Thread Prev] [Thread Next] [Author Index] [Topic Index] [Home] [Search]Don-- My reply to Thor didn't have much to say on pricing, but more about what I thought were the most attractive pieces in the kit and what to keep and what to shed. I also advised him to offer pieces individually on the list to folks, as I'm sure LUG'ers will snap most of them up pretty quickly. I also wanted to check on some serial numbers and dates for a few things just to confirm some information. That I'll do tomorrow. But what I wrote I'll summarize, or paraphrase, here; this is my opinion--feel free to disagree: The older camera Thor notes is most likely a Leica IIIf, released first in 1954, with serials starting at 685000. I told him that the next camera to pick up from there was the IIIg, in 1957, whose serials began with 825001. I noted that the IIIf is a wonderful piece. I also asked if he could locate the serial number on the lens of the IIIf, and if it had a brand name, like Elmar or Summicron. I also advised against keeping the CL over and above either the M4 or the IIIf, or the M6, for that matter. The M6 would sell relatively quickly given the market for MPs these days, you can get a checkup and year warranty from Leica on both M4 and M6, and offer that to a buyer to enhance their values and reliability factors. If I were the owner, I would do the following: Keep the M4 and its meter, and keep the bayonet lenses that are currently 'with' the M6. Sell the M6, and it could probably go for about $1200 or so, and definitely at $1200-$1300 with the warranty. Worth putting the extra money into it to make it a sure piece, in my opinion. The Vivitar flash and Sekonic aren't interesting to me, so those I advised Thor to sell on Ebay, if he wanted to do so. Or here. On the Nikor, I advised Thor to talk to Karen Nakamura, and directed him to her site, at http://www.photoethnography.com/. I confess I'm not that knowledgeable on the Nikor issue, so I prefer to defer to the expert. I think Thor could probably get more for the whole lot if he were to sell individually, rather than going into a dealer and trying to peddle the whole bag at once. What I said: "The best way to sell these items is to sell each piece individually to someone who really wants them. To sell the whole collection at once you'll lose value. There are folks on the LUG who will pick up these lenses and cameras individually, and pay you a fair price for each one. I can also consign these for you for a song, or put you in touch with buyers who want certain items. I have one currrently who might be interested in the M4." How's that sound? Oh come on Kit. The rest of us would like to know some one else's opinion of what the kit is worth. :) :) Really, I am not trying to cause trouble, but with Leica prices in a flux and very little coming into dealers hands, values are somewhat difficult to determine today. An example would be a clean M6 sitting on a dealers shelf at $1200. If it sold in a week then I would know that the price may have been a touch low. Likewise, if that same camera was there in two months then the price was too high. (This all assumes a large enough customer base to have many potentially interested parties look at the item in a short period of time). With the internet, I almost never get to compare actual cameras to actual prices. Thor-- I'm contacting you off-list for this info. You've got a nice collection of goodies there. :) Kit -----Original Message----- From: lug-bounces+kitmc=vuelux.com@leica-users.org [mailto:lug-bounces+kitmc=vuelux.com@leica-users.org] On Behalf Of thor taggart Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2004 9:12 AM To: Leica Users Group Subject: Re: [Leica] leica collection inherited, for sale?? hi Kit thanks again for your response. I've decided to hang on the the CL, and to try to learn its use. The M6 is "minty", no marks or scratches, and has mounted a Summicron 50mm, #3263162. I find no serial # on the camera body, except on the hotshoe (?) mount. In the bag with the M6 is an Elmar 90mm, #2643967, and an Elmarit 28mm(?) # 3276781. Also in the bag is a Sekonik Studio Deluxe light meter, and a Vivitar 2800 flash. The M4 is # 1192835, and has mounted to the "hotshoe" a Leica MR light meter. It has mounted a Summicron 50mm, # 2031026. It has no dings or scratches, no brassing, has been used and shows handling. In the bag with this camera is a Nikor-P 8.5cm lense, #396762. The older Leica has # 772840, and has mounted a 50mm lense, that pulls out from the body. This camera shows no brassing, no dings or scratches. Any information you can impart on these cameras is much appreciated. regards, Thor Taggart Chandler, AZ _______________________________________________ Leica Users Group.
