Right now, my images reside on the internal hard disk in the computer and a backup copy is on an external Firewire hard disk which is only on when things are being written to it. Once I have enough data to fill a DVD I do another backup onto a DVD. Clearly, this a major issue, both from the point of view of physical preservation of the images and perhaps more importantly, accessibility in the future. As far as I can tell, the development of reasonably permanent standards should allow us to access our digital images in the future, assuming they are stored on good media. After all, I can still access an ASCII file created 20 years ago, provided that whatever it is stored on is still readable.
