Until a few years ago it was usually won by Porsche who competed every year on a limited budget but high level of expertise. Every now and again a large manufacturer would decide it would be good for marketing to win Le Mans. It usually took a lot of time and huge financial resources to succeed, but once they had committed they usually had to win.
