I've had a software upgrade to my Canon G5 as well as my wife's Nikon D1x and both perform flawlessly. If the connector technology incorporates the next generation standard socket, why not? A digital sensor is not like film. The whole hardware/software is designed around that particular sensor. You can't just change the sensor and expect everything else to work properly. The R back may be upgradeable in that you can take it off, throw it in the garbage and mount a newer one.
