John,

You may be right, but couldn't Leica also modify its in-camera software at
the same time? I've had a software upgrade to my Canon G5 as well as my
wife's Nikon D1x and both perform flawlessly.

If the connector technology incorporates the next generation standard
socket, why not?

It sure would be nice but I find it difficult to believe. A digital
sensor is not like film. The whole hardware/software is designed around
that particular sensor. You can't just change the sensor and expect
everything else to work properly. The R back may be upgradeable in that
you can take it off, throw it in the garbage and mount a newer one.
