We have surge protected servers which have been running for three years without interruption. You never turn a machine off more than it absolutely have to. Also, the environmental impact of leaving a processor running is negligible. The Carbon Dioxide expended talking about it is more damaging. A high end surge protection device would have prevented Tina's problem.
