Actually, one reason it worked so well is that it was a combination of vintage technologies: High contrast Efke 100 film (which is the old silver-rich, single-layer type), the last-version of the red scale Elmar 5cm lens, and yellow filter for the flesh tones. You need the right combination with the negative before you ever get to a darkroom. In fact, I have never used a darkroom--my Minolta Dimage is as close as I get in a 900 square foot apartment with a micro-bathroom.
