Well the bullets can fly a long distance before they hit anyone and the sound doesn't create an immediate correlation.  At least that's what I've learned from the streets of Brooklyn.

One striking thing about this photograph (other than the obvious) is that 
the passersby seem remarkably casual, given what has just happened.
