The real question is, what do I want the image to look like? Sometimes blurred works, sometimes a DOF of 1mm works, sometimes DOF from 10cm to infinity works. Sometimes it's F8 and be there. People who earn their living with a camera tend to buy fast lenses because if you don't get the shot then you don't get called again. No call is worth what? Amatuers like myself can explore the accident with impunity, people who have children to put through college with their camera ask not how much the camera cost, they ask what images it can make for them. The local pro shop is sold out of Canon 1Ds's. Why; because it delivers medium format quality close enough without a scanning back or film. Fast set up, instant results, can use existing strobes, no film to buy. $8000, no problem: it's cheaper than any scanning back for medium format and it's cheaper than a months worth of film/processing. I agree that a small, light lens is appropriate for some tasks. I understand that most of the time F4 is just fine. But you know, sometimes you need F1.4 or F1 to create the image your brain tells you is just in front of your nose. 0.02 worth Don dorysrus@mindspring.com - -- To unsubscribe, see http://mejac.palo-alto.ca.us/leica-users/unsub.html
