At age 19 my microbiology professor at LSU beamed as he walked into the lab one day entirely outfitted with new Leitz microscopes, the SM Lux model. My introduction to Leitz was looking at E. coli under the oil immersion lens. Two years later at LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans I had to buy a microscope and found an old Leitz on the bulletin board passed down through many students to me. Superb! At age 40 I finally had enough money ahead to buy a pair of Leica binoculars. After years of squinting through Bell and Howell, Minolta, and Nikon, I could now see from the south end of the west side of Tiger Stadium down to the north end, west side where the cheerleaders were and tell who was enthusiastic and who had had a hard night the evening before. Now at age 50 I've bought a M2, a IIIa, and a Leitz Focomat Ic off of Ebay. My Nikon F3 will probably be given to my daughter. So it all does start with their microscopes. But don't try to find a Leitz microscope users group on the internet. I've looked. Lee England
