90/2.8 is fine for head shots. Mine is somewhat soft at 2.8 - which does
wonders for complexions. Why not find a head and experiment with your lens?

Lighting, composition, film, and inspiration are far more important
variables than the lens for portraiture. Few of my continually expanding
portfolio of failures can be blamed on equipment... Misuse perhaps, but not
the equipment itself.
