I'd have a signed contract even if I was shooting a family member. It's the 
one rule I never bend anymore even if no money is changing hands. Most 
friends don't balk if you explain that such an agreement will help you out 
as tax paperwork. If they aren't friends, then it shouldn't feel odd to 
them anyhow if you are a working pro.
