I realize that most M6 users shoot handheld >(as I did, on my recent trip to India, and the slides look awesome!) but I >am used to an SLR + tripod, and would occasionaly like to use a tripod with >the M6. Does the offset socket cause stabilty problems, especially with >vertical compositions? I like to keep the film rewind at the top because I can crank faster, but it means the viewfinder is at the bottom where my face sometimes clashes with the tripod. I've had to learn to pull up the center post about 6 inches to prevent this, I have a Gitzo 1228 carbon with a couple of ball heads. One is a Foba with quick release and the other is a small Gitzo ball that I bought for the M6. Really Right Stuff makes a quick release plate for the M6 which is beautiful in design and stability. But it adds weight to the camera, and the quick release system on the Foba adds weight to the tripod. This my most stable and precise setup, but it is bulky( by my standards) for travel. My little Gitzo head has an inner component that moves. When you go vertical you have to make sure the base of the platform hooks into the notch to be able to go vertical and rotate. I think that is a pain. You can also invest in a M grip which will center the tripod hole and give you a better grip when hand holding. Awhile back I posed the question of ball heads for the 1228 and M6, Someone raved about a Giotto medium ball head while another was using exactly the same Foba head without quick release. This is probably more than you wanted to Know - hope it is of some assistance.
