The first ones were ground by machines, the present ones moulded.

This may be folklore, but my understanding is that the aspherical elements
in the first version Noctilux and 35 aspherical were ground largely by
hand, whereas the current ASPH elements are ground using machines, hence
their relatively lower cost.
