One trick is to move your body back and forth to achieve fine focus,
instead of trying to follow focus by twisting the lens barrel.  That is,
if you have already focussed, and then your subject leans back away from
the camera, just lean towards them to the same amount and the focus will
be correct again.  This works much more quickly than trying to remember
which way to spin the barrel.
