Actually, Martin, you're using a technique espoused by Ansel 
Adams who had a metronome going in his darkroom for timing print 
exposures.  Rather than a metronome, I'm using a multi-featured 
stopwatch from Radio Shack whose pace function can be set to 
sound a beep at one second intervals.  I find it convenient for 
burning and dodging because I can do so by counting beeps rather 
than by looking at a timer dial or counting "one thousand one, etc."  
It's also very handy for split printing - so many beeps under the 
green, so many under the blue.  And after the print exposure I leave 
it on to time immersions of the print in the stop and fixer.
