Donal, I'd simplify it even further (as a personal credo, only, capisce):

I like to take pictures, and I like to take pictures of things I like.

I was doing a slide show recently of my Dharavi slum stuff, with a mix of
Indian and English audience, and one Englishman in particular asked me why
I want to drag myself through the gutter to take pictures (he was a bit
overboard anyway, as it turned out). But I _like_ it, was the only reply I
could come up with! What could be more interesting!
Unfortunately, and it's what makes me a fair weather photographer rather
than a pro, the corollary in my case is:

I like to take pictures, but I take bad pictures of things that don't turn
me on.

So it goes...
