Does anyone have any good data on what the image range (say in stops) and 
the resolution within this range is for both film vs digital image sensors?

I would like to also know if this information is theoretical or actually 
measured.  Just because you have N bits of A/D data, doesn't mean all N 
bits are usable...and I would guess for image sensors the resolution is not 
linear across the range...
