since nobody's responded to the l.a. part of the question (and my apologies
if they have and i missed it), i'll throw in my 2 cents, having been born
and lived all my life in that most maligned of cities. the following are
just suggestions. if you're interested, martin (or anybody else going
there), just request details and i'll do my best to provide:

(please note: without a car nothing is possible in los angeles)

- - downtown (all within walking distance):
   bunker hill and angel's flight funicular
   the grand central market (great mexican food at ana maria's)
   the bradbury building
   moca

- - also downtown:
   little tokyo + japanese-american museum (great japanese food everywhere)
   olvera street (the original heart of the city, the pueblo de los
angeles, very touristy)

- - west side:
   venice beach (*the* freak out spot)
   santa monica pier and beach (interesting gang and frenetic yuppy activity)
   beverly hills/rodeo drive (brash capitalism in all its vulgar splendor,
with vicious shoppers and cell phoning, wannabe movie-moguling, latte
sippers)

- - east side:
   silverlake and los feliz neighborhoods (the hit spots for hipsters -
everybody dresses ugly and most folks get robbed, but hey! it's a happenin'
place)

- - midtown:
   the 'midwilshire district' (museums + orthodox jewish quarter - great
delis and middle eastern restaurants)
   melrose ave. (faux-punk, king's row-like haven for the purple-haired and
pierced-nipple crowd)

that's all i can think of at the moment.
