Most lubricants tend to drift, and the vapors will tend to condense on the glass making a haze. I would imagine that the lubricants for lenses are either cheically 'soaps' of a given molecular weight that are less prone to sublimation or evaporation, or similar to high quality clock oils that are made to stay stable for years without getting gummy or stringy, and stay put.You would be surprised at how far a solvent carried material like WD-40 will travel.... the very name meant that it was a Water Displacement formula, and was designed to get into wiring, displace water, and travel far beyound where it was applied!
