Dan,

The UK has by far the highest "sin" taxes in the EU, except perhaps Sweden and
Finland. Hence, booze is very expensive as is tobacco (about $6.50 for a pack
of cigarettes). For this very reason the English are very fond of occasional
trips across the Channel to shop in the conveniently located shops in Calais.
